Calhoun-Isles (like Southwest and Nokomis) encompasses several smaller neighborhoods, including Uptown, Kenwood, East Isles, Lowry Hill and Bryn Mawr, and also includes the large and publicly accessible Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles.
Uptown has the most lively, trendy, urban-pulse commercial district in all of residential Minneapolis. This neighborhood features upper and middle bracket homes, and also attracts a dynamic population of young adults to its old and beautiful brick apartment buildings.
Kenwood and East Isles surround Lake of the Isles, with Lowry Hill running north of Franklin Ave up to the Mount Curve Blvd. The homes in this area often exceed the million dollar mark ? and yet the demographic leans more to the cultural and political left than in one would find in an equally affluent suburban neighborhood. Lowry Hill is named after Thomas Lowry who started the streetcar system in Minneapolis and originally featured the mansion-estates of the very wealthiest Minnesotans.
Bryn Mawr is a small bedroom community, just west of downtown, with smaller homes than are found close to the lakes. This neighborhood is always in high demand because of the quiet and ease of access for many professionals working downtown.
Most of the homes in the entire area (including the Calhoun and Lowry neighborhoods) were built between 1900 and 1925, and many of these homes posses the craftsman charm that so many people look for in a Minneapolis city home.
